About Malatang

Discover the story behind one of China's most beloved comfort foods and how MOGU has reimagined it for Amsterdam.

The origins of Malatang

The Origins

Malatang has been a staple of Chinese street food culture for decades. Originating in the Sichuan region, it combines the warmth of a rich broth with the freedom to create a bowl tailored entirely to your own taste.

Fresh vegetables, mushrooms, tofu, noodles, and proteins are selected individually before being cooked in a flavorful soup base. The result is a meal that is nourishing, vibrant, and deeply personal!

The Experience

What makes Malatang unique is the experience itself. You choose exactly what goes into your bowl, creating endless combinations and making every meal different.

This interactive approach transformed Malatang into one of China's most popular everyday meals and remains at the heart of the experience today.

The MOGU Interpretation

At MOGU, we've modernized this tradition using carefully sourced ingredients and handcrafted broths inspired by culinary traditions across Asia.

Alongside our authentic Sichuan-style base, we've introduced flavors such as Japanese Miso and Thai-inspired Tom Kha, creating a contemporary interpretation while remaining true to the spirit of Malatang.

Every day, we search for the freshest ingredients available so that every bowl delivers the vibrant flavors and wholesome experience that define MOGU.

As part of our commitment to quality and sustainability, we also cultivate selected mushrooms in our own Mushroom Lab beneath the restaurant, including Lion's Mane and Oyster mushrooms.
